On a perfect saturday afternoon for racing, there was a buzz in the pit area as the 25 Time Canadian National Champion “Slammin” Scotty Murdoch was signed in to race the Terrell Motorsports #35 entry. You could tell everyone was on there game. The afternoon race started with a meet and greet autograph session with the Canadian Champ, in which fans and racers alike waited in the long line to meet Mr. Murdoch.
After the autogragh session qualifying got under way with a bang as the #7S of Michael Streby from Snohomish broke his own track record turning a lap of 8.12 seconds. The old record of 8.20 seconds had stood for over 3 years.
In heat #1 the “Hammer” Tom Kays lost a chain twice and had a dnf, but once racing resumed an intense battle between the #5 of Jim Streby, #20 of Riley Hood and the #7S of Michael Streby put on 8 fantastic laps of side by side racing with the “Jet” Jim Streby picking up the win over Michael Streby.
Heat 2 saw the #4 of Tom Kays jump to the lead and lead wire to wire to win heat #2 over the #8R of Granite Falls Matt Streby
Heat 3 was the debut of “Slammin” Scotty and he would lead the field to the green, on the initial start the #8R jumped the start and got into the back of the #3 kart driven by this years Rookie of the Year Heather Streby, Matt tried to wave off the start but the offical let it go, Murdoch would lead the first couple laps until the #94 of Arlington’s Tyler Hood would pass the 25 time Champion and go on to pick up the win over a hard charging Matt Streby who came home in 2nd after being down half a lap at the start of the race, Murdoch held onto 3rd and Heather Streby in 4th. The rookie Heather did let the vetran Matt know she was not pleased about the start in the pits after the race.
Heat 4 saw the Hillbilly Circus Racing #5 of Jim Streby lead all 8 laps winning his second heat race of the night again over the #7S of Michael Streby.
After the heat races the points were tallied up & it was the track owner Jim Streby with the high points total for the first time this year, and he rolled a 4 on the dice roll inversion, which meant a fully inverted main event, which put the Canadian National Champion on the pole with Heather Streby on the outside front row for the 25 lap Main Event.
At the drop of the Sue Streby green flag it was “Slammin” Scott Murdoch jumping into the lead, but it was short lived as the “Hammer” Tom Kays in the Harwood Transportation #4 passed the Canadian on lap 3 to take the lead, the #8R of Matt Streby also made quick work getting around Murdoch and set his sites on Kays. Both drivers were looking for there first win of the year at Streby Speedway and for Kays his first win ever the Speedway. Kays was setting a blistering pace with the #8R trying everything in his power to make the pass for the lead, at the half way point the “Fonz” Michael Streby had finally worked past the Hood brothers and Murdoch and was gaining on the leaders he just needed a caution to be in contention for the win, and he got it as the #5 Jim Streby and the #94 of Tyler Hood got together to bring out the first yellow flag of the race. With just a few laps to go Kays had his hands full with the #8R and the #7S now nose to tail right behind him on the restart. Kays got a great start and was able to protect the bottom going into turn 1. But the 8R of Streby had a great run going down the back straight away and looked to the inside of Kays going into turn 3, and what looked like a possible lead change was for not as the caution flag flew once more as the #5 of Streby and the #94 of Hood were tangled up again, this time at the opposite end of the track. so with just 3 laps to go Kays would lead the field single file to the green and he would run 3 perfect laps, and pick up the win as he held off the #8R of Matt Streby who settled for a season best 2nd place finish for the win, coming home in 3rd and earning the hard charger award was the #7S of Michael Streby, 4th went to the #20 of Riley Hood who looks better and better every week, 5th went to the Canadian National Champion Murdoch who found out the competition at Streby Speedway is as tough as anywhere in North America. Rounding out the field was the #94 Tyler Hood, #5 Jim Streby, and the #3 of Heather Streby.
In a popular win, an emotional Tom Kays emerged in victory lane to the cheers of fans and racers alike and thanked his sponsors and thanked Scott Murdoch for coming all the way down from Vancouver to race with us and thanked all the fans for coming out and supporting the track.
